The Great General: Book One: The Chosen of Man – Book Review
I received a review copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
I was very excited to read this book, The Great General, the first in a new series called The Chosen of Man. It’s by Lesley M.C. Wick and currently available on Amazon in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle editions. It’s also in the new Kindle+ (Kindle Unlimited). So, however you prefer to read, the book is available. I was drawn in by the cover and the description from the jump. This concept of an elaborate fantasy structured around conflict, power, fate, and a dangerous connection between enemies sounded right up my alley.
In short, it didn’t disappoint. So let’s dive into why I loved it, in this spoiler-free review.
The Book
So what is The Great General all about? Alessio and his cohorts are assigned a near-impossible task: capture the feared Great General, the leader of Vatan’s troops, on a mission that could save the humans of the Earth Zone. But the General is much more than a military target. She is the daughter of the Great Ruler of the Molkeh people, and has spent hundreds of years plotting to kill and replace her mother, but being taken by human enemies cuts her off from her magic.
The premise generates immediate stakes on either side of the fight. Alessio and the General can’t afford to trust each other yet, but an inescapable connection is forged between them, bringing animosity, attraction, and the prospect of an alliance neither foresaw.
The Feeling
Wick makes the plot feel like a grand fantasy war, but the emotional intensity is nonetheless intimate. The book has lots of potential for political intrigue and shifting loyalties as the struggle between human and Molkeh interests, and the General’s own perilous familial ambitions plays out. What is so interesting about the relationship between Alessio and the General is its volatility. It makes us wonder whether connection can endure when both characters have so much to lose.
Who Is It For?
For readers who appreciate high stakes action, an innovative fantasy premise, and a central connection filled with tension between enemies facing the possibility of an alliance, strong magical figures, and epic confrontations where the fate of entire nations is at risk, The Chosen of Man is an exciting introduction.
Here we have an ambitious fantasy story built around war, power, fate, and a dangerous connection between enemies.
The Great General is available now in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle editions. It’s also available in Kindle Unlimited (Kindle+).
