Old: What Happens As We Age? – Book Review
This is a book everyone should own! I received a review copy of Old: What Happens as We Age? and it was so informative, as well as pleasant to read. Using humor to break through some of those difficult-to-talk-about subjects, Dr. Parkhurst has created an amazing guide for aging and end-of-life planning.
We all have to deal with aging, but we rarely find the kind of clear-cut, caring advice that Dr. Doreen C. Parkhurst offers in her enlightening book, Old: What Happens as We Age? This book is a priceless tool for anybody wishing to get a deeper understanding of the aging process because Dr. Parkhurst, who draws from more than 30 years of experience as a doctor and patient advocate, approaches the complicated facts of aging with grace and humor.
Dr. Parkhurst makes her vast expertise come to life in an approachable and captivating manner right from the first page. With just the right amount of humor to keep readers laughing, she simplifies down medical ideas that may sometimes feel scary into manageable, easy-to-read portions. This is not some dry medical textbook. Instead, it reads like a kind and consoling discussion with a good friend who also happens to be an expert on the aging process of our bodies.
This book covers difficult subjects, such as memory loss, chronic illnesses, mobility issues, and even end-of-life care and does so in a relatable and easy to understand way. It’s packed full of practical advice that will help you with your own life planning, or with a loved one.
Her use of facts to empower readers is one thing that sets this book apart. Many of us would like this kind of helpful counsel but are too scared to ask for it. In some cultures and households, these types of things just aren’t talked about. This book provides straightforward direction at every stage, whether you’re planning for your own aging journey, taking care of a loved one, or making healthcare decisions.
Being a doctor herself, Dr. Parkhurst’s background is evident, and this book is truly unique due to her caring approach to patient advocacy. In today’s frequently overwhelming medical environment, she emphasizes the vital role of healthcare advocates in ensuring that senior citizens receive the respect and care they are entitled to. Her guidance on overcoming these obstacles is given with compassion and useful knowledge, leaving the reader feeling informed and encouraged.
I also really enjoyed how she uses real-life situations within the story, keeping it relatable, but also making the information easier to consume. It’s similar to having a conversation with a trusted doctor who addresses your issues head-on and provides not only medical advice but also a comprehensive grasp of aging.
Old: What Happens as We Age? is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand aging, whether they are a caretaker, a healthcare professional, or someone who is just thinking about the future.
It’s available on Amazon in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle editions.
