Stellar Heir: (Stellar Heir Book 1) – Book Review

by Scott Killian

I am so excited to tell you about this book I just finished reading! I received a review copy of this sci-fi novel and the blurb plus the awesome cover had be so excited to dive in. The book is described as “A high-octane space opera that blends adrenaline-fueled martial arts with interstellar thriller, Stellar Heir is perfect for fans of sci-fi like Sun Eater by Christopher Ruocchio or Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey.

From the first lines, it draws you into the world, making you want to learn more. The writing is so descriptive, you get pulled right into this science fiction tale. A humanoid simian with three-fingered hands, spaceships flying in starlanes, a quasar shimmering in the distance, and a woman who seems to appear out of nowhere… there’s a lot of action happening right in the first two chapters.

The space opera Stellar Heir by Scott Killian picks up speed quickly and doesn’t slow down. As the debut novel for the series, Stellar Heir lays the foundation for an interstellar journey filled with martial arts, extraterrestrial treasures, and battles that span entire galaxies. From the time I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down. I had to find out what happened next, which lent itself to a couple of late night reading sessions. So, let’s take a look at what it’s all about.

The narrative centers on Jael Ked’Korhva, a scavenger and former warrior monk whose life is completely upended by an alien artifact he discovers. He gains superpowers from the artifact, including enhanced senses, quicker reflexes, and the capacity to recover from nearly any wound. The stakes rise as Jael negotiates this new world and he turns into the galaxy’s most wanted man.

The genre mashup in Stellar Heir is among its best features. It’s a space opera with the rhythm of a thriller and the discipline of martial arts. Jael’s skillfully planned combat scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat as he engages in fierce battles with his opponents. One of the book’s advantages is Killian’s skill at creating action sequences that are like movies.

The world-building is excellent as well. During his galactic trip, Killian introduces you to a variety of extraterrestrial life, icy planets, and political intrigue. This place is full of villains, all of which are more lethal than the last and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The dangers Jael encounters are as varied as they are horrifying, ranging from space pirates to shadowy monsters.

Killian doesn’t overlook character development despite the constant action. Torn between his current life on the run and his tranquil background as a monk, Jael makes a fantastic protagonist. The supporting cast gives the narrative complexity, and their interactions with Jael change in intriguing ways that keep the plot fascinating.

To provide a respite from the action, the book is also interspersed with a little romance and humor. In a galaxy far, far away, this gives the characters greater realism and gives the plot complexity. In short, I loved it. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, and I highly recommend it.

Read Stellar Heir if you’re looking for a heartfelt interstellar adventure. Scott Killian has created a novel that will leave you wanting more because of its fantastic characters, action sequences, and world building.
