The Necromancer’s End: An Epic Fantasy Adventure – Review

The Necromancer’s End: An Epic Fantasy Adventure” by Jack Pembroke gives us an exciting introduction to this series, a strong and unique main character, and a world where morality is nuanced, and adventure abounds. As soon as I heard about this book, I knew that I wanted to read it for myself. I am so grateful to have the opportunity, as I got a review copy of it and just finished it this week.

I will say upfront that I loved this story and I cannot wait for more! Let’s break it down and talk (spoiler free) about what I enjoyed about The Necromancer’s End.

Main Character

The protagonist of the story is Jeremiah Thorn, a young necromancer whose misinterpreted abilities make him an outsider in a community that terrifies him. I’ve always loved stories about necromancers, and I love that initially, Jeremiah has no idea what he’s doing. We usually see necromancers portrayed as strong and powerful characters and it’s unique and fun to see the story begin with one who has no idea what he’s doing.

But that will change, as he finds his way. And the journey won’t be alone. Jeremiah travels with his peculiar familiar – a toad – and some quirky new companions. Being a big fan of frogs/toads, I was really enjoyed this part. His story is one of unquestionable charm and tenacity, which makes you warm up to him and root for his plight right from the start.

Adventure

A year of exciting adventures and significant personal development begins with Jeremiah’s chance meeting with a diverse group of adventurers. The story does a fantastic job of combining high-stakes action with reflective moments, letting you delve deeply into the emotions and motivations of each character. This gang of explorers becomes Jeremiah’s new family, pushing and encouraging him as he faces his identity and skills. They are more than simply a means to an end.

I’m obsessed with stories of found family, so this part really touched my heart as well. I think it was well done in the writing, dialogue and scene-setting to help us as readers understand the connections he makes and why they are significant to who he is and how he learns about his special abilities.

Necromancy

Necromancy, which is sometimes portrayed as a sinister practice in many fiction stories, is handled deftly and imaginatively in Pembroke’s story. The story of Jeremiah challenges the dichotomy of good vs evil by introducing a protagonist who is both evil and kind at heart (and aren’t we all like this, really?). This gives new meaning to the traditional fantasy paradigm of magic users.

The novel is a delight to read, with its LitRPG-style intricate world-building that draws you into the universe the author has created and invites you to sit and stay awhile, to the unique and fun supporting cast. Fans of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (two of my faves) will love this one. You’re going to feel like you’re in a massive D&D campaign with Jeremiah, helping him on his epic quest.

Summary

Every character advances the plot and advances the protagonist, adding to the story’s pace. Because of the antagonist’s important task, Jeremiah must make more difficult decisions, which heightens the suspense of his trip. The supporting cast help move things in the right direction and aid in Jeremiah’s personal development and growth.

We are prompted to consider moral ambiguity, acceptance, and personal development by this tale. Overall, it’s an amazing fantasy journey that will leave you eager for the next book and wanting to know more about Jeremiah and his companions.
