Chasing Shadows: “My Life as a Pseudo-Law Extremist” Book Review

by Mr Brodie Finegan Forbes MICM

Raw, unadulterated reality can sometimes have a greater impact than fiction or fantasy. The autobiography Chasing Shadows: “My Life as a Pseudo-Law Extremist” by Brodie Finegan Forbes is one example. It is a fearless, enlightening exploration of sovereign-citizen beliefs, pseudo-legal philosophies, and the terrible effects they may have on people’s lives.

I love memoirs and I was intrigued by this story and happy when the author offered me a review copy. I was excited to read it and share my thoughts with all of you here. First, I will say that I enjoyed it. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect, but I like to go into books with an open mind, so that’s exactly what I did here.

Sensitive Content Warning: This book may contain content
that some readers might find sensitive or controversial. Reader
discretion is advised, as the material may touch upon legal,
social, and personal issues that are complex and potentially
distressing.

There are several disclaimers and warnings in the beginning of the book, so please check those before you begin reading. This book doesn’t hold back – which is what I like about it. The first two words of chapter one dive right in: “Fuck off.”

Forbes’ story captures your attention from the first page with its genuineness and openness as it begins talking about boundaries, the pandemic, and how it impacted all of us. This is a passionate examination of the appeal of ideologies that promise liberty and self-determination but frequently result in anarchy and loneliness, not merely a recitation of events. Forbes walks us through his own journey into the maze of pseudo-law extremism, explaining how its claims of emancipation and strength drew him in. His zeal is almost contagious at first, but as the story goes on, the negative effects of these convictions become apparent.

He warns you early on that the book will be a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns, and I have to say I agree. It doesn’t unfold in ways you’re likely to guess. And whether you agree with all he has to say or not, it will definitely capture your attention and keep you thinking, long after you put down the book.

Forbes’ readiness to face his own motivations and mistakes is one of the things I liked the most about Chasing Shadows. The increasing court cases, personal turmoil, and strained relationships that followed his immersion in these extreme views are depicted in the book without holding back. Forbes’ frank observations provide readers a deep comprehension of the psychological and emotional costs associated with residing in a society that is based on false information and deceit.

Forbes has a gift for telling compelling stories that simplify even the most difficult legal and ideological ideas. His stories, which are vivid and frequently terrifying, depict a man who is enmeshed in a web of delusions yet is still trying to make sense of it all. As Forbes recounts the harrowing yet transforming process of escaping the shadows of radicalism, the memoir has a tone that is both uplifting and cautionary.

It’s a short book – but you may find yourself wanting to go slow, taking your time on certain sections and the thoughts that they bring up for you. If you’re not familiar with sovereign-citizen ideology, you’ll learn some new things as you follow along with Forbes’ journey. This is a story about searching for truth, but it’s also a story about letting go. It’s about learning from past mistakes. And it’s about moving forward with clear purpose.

The significance of Chasing Shadows in the modern world is what really sets it apart. This biography is a potent warning against the growth of disinformation and ideological extremism. It serves as a reminder of the value of critical thinking, self-awareness, and having the guts to face difficult realities. Forbes’ quest encompasses not only his own hardships but also the global pursuit of truth, independence, and true empowerment.

This story is a profoundly intimate and life-changing tale that speaks to us on a variety of levels. This book is a must-read for anybody interested in the relationship between belief and reality because of Forbes’ inspirational and frightening journey from entanglement to illumination. One thing I can guarantee – you’ve never read a book like this one before!

It’s available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions.
