Ghosts: The People That Melt in The Rain #2 – Book Review
I received a review copy of this book and was so delighted to read it and tell you all about it! It is officially “spooky season” in my house, which also means I’m on the lookout for great new spooky reads. And this is a good one for all ages.
Ghosts: The People That Melt in the Rain #2 by Carolyn Watson-Dubisch is a paranormal graphic novel suitable for younger readers. It’s the second book in the series. Laura, our main character, is confused. One moment she’s in the school library and the next she’s in the audience of a show. And is that… her grandmother?
If you know me, then you already know that I love a great time-travel plot. Laura goes to an unfamiliar place where she’s not even sure if the people are real. And she doesn’t know how she will get back home.
In this sequel, Laura, a young child who is only starting to get used to life in the peculiar town of Deluge, is abruptly thrust into a painting at her school’s library. She finds herself back home in Seattle, but everything about the city feels different – almost as if she’s been hurled back in time – and what happens next is a maelstrom of mystery. The mysterious atmosphere and magical realism of the novel only serve to heighten the suspense and pique readers’ curiosity about what odd forces are at work and what is happening to Laura.
This graphic novel is the ideal combination of unsettling imagery and a captivating plot that keeps readers interested from beginning to end, especially when combined with the vivid images by Mike Dubisch. His intricate artwork evokes strong feelings and vividly depicts the spooky, rain-soaked world of Deluge. The graphic novel format is incredibly approachable, especially for younger readers who might not find standard chapter novels as captivating.
In addition to elevating the tone and bringing readers into Laura’s world, the visual storytelling enhances the verbal tale. It’s simple to understand how the narrative and images might appeal to fans of graphic novels as well as reluctant readers.
Deluge, a town with a strange background and peculiar happenings like people melting in the rain, is just as much of a character as Laura. A wonderful balance of tension and intrigue is provided by the subtle yet pervasive sense of danger, which keeps young readers turning the pages without being too overwhelming.
Ghosts: The People That Melt in the Rain‘s underlying themes of courage, camaraderie, and self-discovery are what really make the book stand out. Laura is a likable and inspirational figure for young readers because of her bravery in navigating this bizarre and even terrifying environment. The book is more than just a creepy mystery because it also discusses the value of conquering one’s anxieties and accepting the unknown. It’s a heartfelt tale with insightful life lessons interwoven throughout. This is also one that parents can enjoy reading with their child.
Intriguing mysteries that were presented in the first novel are further developed in this part, which will pique readers’ curiosity about what’s going on in Deluge and how Laura’s story will turn out. The plot is given additional layers by the time travel and shifting realities, which makes for an exciting and intriguing read.
In conclusion, young adults and kids who love creepy, inventive stories with likable characters and atmospheric graphics should definitely read Ghosts: The People That Melt in the Rain #2. This graphic novel has something to interest every reader, whether it’s the relatable protagonist, the exciting plot, or the gorgeous artwork. Readers won’t want to leave the creepy and thrilling world that Carolyn Watson-Dubisch and Mike Dubisch have created anytime soon.
It’s 5 stars from me! Can’t wait to read more from this author.
