A classic legend gets a lively new doorway
Nevermore: The Heir, the Witch and the Fool takes the familiar pull of Arthurian legend and gives it an accessible, modern YA-fantasy shape. I was really excited to get a review copy of this book, and I’m happy to tell you why I loved it in this spoiler-free review.
Chippich opens with a teen named Arthur Pendry, a history-loving high school junior whose school archaeology trip to Scotland becomes the threshold to Nevermore, a hidden realm where magic has survived in secret. What begins with eerie dreams, an ancient castle, and a strange warning quickly expands into a larger story about inheritance, loyalty, and what it costs to answer a calling you never wanted.
A world made for readers who want to explore
One of the strongest highlights of the book is the imagination that goes into Nevermore itself. This realm is full of magical courts, shifting landscapes, hidden history, and mysterious creatures from folklore. It feels familiar in the way you love a good fantasy, but it’s also fresh and unique.
And they are distinct from one another. The Guardian Tree, the Obsidian Court, Nightwood, and even the old ruins all have their own atmosphere. And it was a lot of fun to uncover this magical world along with Arthur and his friends. And through this story we will also see that the fantasy beings of this tale are even more complicated than the labels the humans have given them.
A genuinely likable group at the center
Character development is another aspect of Nevermore that works really well. Arthur is a reluctant hero, and we want to root for him from the start. This is because he is written authentically at 17: curious, overwhelmed, loyal to his friends, and not always fully sure of himself. And his friend group really pulls it all together.
Cammi brings a sharp humor, Dane brings quiet steadiness, Nathan has comic energy, and Kristen has growing confidence, making them all a team worth rooting for. The way they choose to show up for one another is heartwarming, and their banter keeps the serious parts of the book from becoming too solemn. The stakes matter because the relationships between the characters matter.
Magic with heart
Chippich is clearly interested in the emotional side of fantasy as much as the spectacle. The story returns often to questions of mercy, sacrifice, responsibility, and whether people can be more than their worst history. Several encounters challenge first impressions in satisfying ways, and Arthur’s path is not simply about discovering royal blood; it is about learning what kind of leader he wants to become. The novel also makes room for family, especially in Arthur’s relationship with his mother and grandmother, which gives the opening and later revelations an affectionate, grounded core.
A strong start to a continuing adventure
The story clips along with short chapters and no shortage of mysteries, magical allies, betrayals, and twists that keep you turning pages. If you’re into classic fantasy adventures with a modern twist, this one delivers — a secret world, a legendary mentor, a big looming threat, and a hero figuring out how to step into a role way bigger than he expected. The ending wraps up this part of Arthur’s journey nicely while leaving some really intriguing questions and darker possibilities on the horizon. It’s the kind of finale that’ll have you watching for the next book.
Final thoughts
Nevermore: The Heir, the Witch and the Fool is a fun, heartfelt YA fantasy that runs with its Arthurian roots and builds something fresh out of them. It’s easy to follow, full of characters you actually root for, and packed with enough lore and magic to pull you right in. Chippich has kicked off a really promising series — one that works for teen readers, younger readers ready to level up to bigger fantasy stories, and adults who still love the idea of a door opening into a world where the old legends aren’t done yet.
