Is BookTok Dead?
The question of whether BookTok is dead is a hot topic these days. This concern or rumor seems to cycle every now and then. So, is Booktok dead?
Short answer? Nope. No way. Not even close.
Every few months or so somebody drops a hot take about how BookTok is dead, the algorithm ruined it, the magic is gone, readers have moved on. And every few months one more self-published author goes viral, sells thousands of copies in a weekend, and proves that take totally wrong.
I know an author who just the past three months launched their debut series, promoted ONLY on Booktok – no ads – and has earned $8K so far in that timeframe.
So let’s talk about what’s really happening with BookTok in 2026, why it still matters to authors (especially indie authors), and how you can use it to get your book in front of readers who are genuinely looking for their next obsession.
The numbers do not lie. If BookTok were dying, the numbers would say. It does not.
The #BookTok hashtag has over 370 billion views on TikTok and more than 50 million videos participating in the conversation. Books that feature on BookTok see an average 600% increase in sales, and 45% of TikTok users have purchased a book after seeing it on TikTok.
Creator partnerships now are at the heart of publishers’ marketing strategy. That’s not a life support platform. That’s a platform that has fundamentally changed the way people find books, and it’s still doing that every single day.
BookTok is still bringing in tens of millions in sales for authors who had no publicist, no agent, and no marketing budget. Just a book that hit.
Read it again. No PR person. No agent. No budget for marketing. If you’re an indie author, that should make your ears prick up, because that could be you.
It Didn’t Peak – It Matured
What the “BookTok is dead” crowd is really saying is this: the platform has changed. And they’re right on that bit. Those wild, free-for-all days of posting a blurry video of your book and waking up to 500 sales are mostly gone. By 2026, TikTok is a more mature, strategic discovery channel that rewards authors willing to learn its specific format and show up consistently.
That’s evolution.
The winning authors on TikTok today aren’t the ones looking for random virality. It’s the ones that come with real compelling content that speak to people on a human level.
One short video of someone honestly excited about a book, holding it up, talking about why they loved it, can sell thousands of copies in a way no algorithm-driven ad campaign really can. There is an authenticity that readers respond to. It feels like a recommendation from a friend rather than an advertisement, because essentially that’s what it is.
And it’s that authenticity that makes BookTok so powerful for indie authors. You don’t need a big following. Professional production quality not required. You have to be real, you have to be passionate about your book, and you have to know what the community wants.
Romance and Paranormal Are Booming
If you write romance, dark romance, paranormal, romantasy or monster romance then BookTok is practically made for you.
Romantasy will continue to dominate BookTok in 2027, with paranormal and supernatural elements sure to be especially popular, say BookTok creators across the board. The community has also normalized conversations about how spicy books are, with readers actively sharing their preferences using pepper rating systems that have become standard vocabulary.
That’s a BIG deal for indie authors in these genres. BookTok readers are not afraid to say what they want. They are looking for spicy paranormal romance, dark fantasy, monster romance, shifter stories, and all the sub-genres that indie authors do so well. There is an audience. They’re hungry. And they are buying it.
But don’t believe the rumors that only romance does well on BookTok. All genres can perform well there, as there are all different types of readers using the platform.
TikTok Shop Revolutionized the Game
One of the biggest changes for authors on TikTok is the growth of TikTok Shop. Now authors can list signed copies, bundles and merch directly on the platform, and affiliates promote and earn commission only on sales, meaning zero risk to the author.
Real examples from 2026 show creators reporting $23,000 per month combined with Amazon fulfillment, and several have hit six figures in one 30-day period through affiliate networks. BookTok virality turns into high-margin revenue.
This is not a hypothetical. BookTok readers don’t just browse; they buy, and those are real authors making real money.
What Are The Benefits for Indie Authors?
One thing that isn’t said enough: Indie authors have many ways in which they are actually better situated to succeed on BookTok than traditionally published authors.
Since you control your pricing, you can run strategic promotions that will align with a BookTok push. You get to control your covers so you can design for the aesthetic that BookTok readers are into. You control your release schedule, so you can jump on trends as they happen, instead of waiting eighteen months for a traditional publishing cycle. And you can connect directly with readers and creators without using a PR team.
BookTok is a community that reacts well to authenticity and poorly to anything that feels like pure advertising. BookTok loves indie authors who show up as themselves, talk about their books with real passion, and interact with the community.
The Backlist Impact
But one of the most underrated benefits of BookTok is what it does for your backlist. The most popular BookTok books are consistently driving readers to authors’ backlists, converting one viral moment into long-term, sustained sales across an entire catalog.
This is where a host of published works can work massively in your favor. A reader finds one of your books because of a BookTok video, loves it and then searches for the rest of your books. If you have a series or multiple titles, that one video just sold five or six books instead of one.
“But I Don’t Want to Be on Camera”
Fair. A lot of writers feel that way, and that’s totally fine. The good news is that you don’t have to be the one making the videos. And you also don’t have to make those types of videos.
BookTok influencers and creators review books all day long, every day. Getting your book in front of the right creator, someone whose audience is in your genre and whose style matches the vibe of your book, can be just as effective as posting it yourself. Often more effective because their audience already trusts their advice.

How AnnaliseReads Can Help You
You want to write books, not spend hours learning TikTok algorithms, figuring out which creators to reach out to, writing pitches, and scheduling promotions. And that’s where I can help. Because reading is my passion and internet marketing/ content marketing is my profession.
It’s the perfect win-win for you, and me.
So No, BookTok Isn’t Dead.
It’s not like it was in 2021 when I first started my reader account. The strategy has changed, when it comes to the best marketing practices, but that happens with all social networks.
But the heart of it, real readers sharing real excitement about books they love, has not changed one bit.
If anything, BookTok in 2026 is even more powerful than ever for indie authors who approach it with intention. There are the readers. The sales are there. There’s opportunity.
The only question is, will your book be the next one they can’t stop talking about?
