Tannis and the Dark Portal – Book Review

I have been so excited to tell you about the book I just finished this week. There are so many great things to say about it, and I am very grateful to have received a review copy. If you are looking for a fresh new book to read today, check out my spoiler-free review and see if this book is for you!
Tannis and the Dark Portal is a captivating beginning to what seems to be a thrilling dark fantasy series. Blending mystery, magic, emotional healing, and coming-of-age themes, T. Wolff develops a novel that repeatedly invites readers to learn the truth alongside its fascinating protagonist.
Are you ready for a journey?
Tannis is a compelling character from even the first few chapters. All he has is his name and no memory of his background or the terrible things that happened to him before. As readers, we get to follow his path of self-discovery, learning as he does. Step by step, he finds refuge with the people of Dantos Estate. And we will watch him rebuild his confidence while doubting the person he previously was.
In short, there are parts of Tannis that all of us can relate to.
The author knows how to set a mood with this book, and each connection feels even more significant due to the themes of conflict, loss and broken alliances. If you’ve ever felt like you don’t know who you can trust, or that no one else can truly understand your grief, this book might resonate with you. The story takes time to build its characters, rather than depend on action scenes alone. And this makes the quiet moments all the more memorable.
Who is Tannis? Where are they from?
The mystery surrounding Tannis’s buried background keeps the pages turning. The unpleasant nightmares add an element of suspense that makes it hard to predict where the plot will go next, and each new discovery raises new questions. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was thrown for another loop. As bits of his past life begin to reappear, the novel addresses issues of redemption, identity, and whether a person can genuinely escape the choices they formerly made.
Are we doomed to mistakes of the past?
The supporting cast contributes to the story’s vividness as well. Tannis’s uncertain trip is complemented by the delightful dynamic created by Dalvia’s strength and drive, while Koh’rrance’s compassion and counsel serve as an emotional anchor. They make together a cast that is sincere and committed to each other’s development.
There is much to like here for fantasy readers who like portal adventures, magical abilities, secret histories, and character-driven narratives. This is an approachable starting point into what seems like a much wider cosmos just waiting to be discovered since the world-building allows for further discoveries without overwhelming the reader.
Overall, Tannis and the Dark Portal presents a compelling blend of mystery, fantasy, and emotional depth. It establishes a solid framework for the book and makes readers want to follow Tannis’s adventure and learn the truths that are yet unknown. I would love to read the next book in the series!
It’s a 10/10 for me.
