Amelia and the Orc: Zarn Book 1 – Book Review

I am super grateful to have received a review copy of Amelia and the Orc: Zarn Book 1 to enjoy and to share with you. This book is available on Amazon in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle edition, as well as Kindle Unlimited.
From the start, the gorgeous cover on this book drew me in. I love that it’s all about a group of young friends who end up being transported to a magical land.
Brett Hillesheim’s engrossing middle-grade fantasy novel Amelia and the Orc takes readers to a vividly imagined world full of magic, adventure, and endearing family dynamics. I was carried away to the realm of Zarn together with Amelia Davies and her siblings as soon as I started reading. This book stands out for the way it skillfully combines significant lessons with a thrilling adventure, giving young readers something to think about while they read.
As the Chosen One, a terrifying burden for any eleven-year-old, Amelia, the courageous and relatable protagonist, is thrown into this role. With her brothers by her side, the narrative skillfully emphasizes tenacity, bravery, and teamwork. Kids can learn from Amelia’s adventure that no matter what age they are, they can make a difference by realizing their own strength and helping to preserve Zarn. The relationship between the characters is real and lovable, and Muck, the courageous and charming orc, adds even more charm and intrigue.
The manner that Amelia and the Orc stresses empathy and the value of helping others, is something I really liked. The close-knit family dynamic and each member’s unique qualities and eccentricities combine to make for a compelling story that will appeal to both parents and kids. This book is actually great for reading aloud to each other, but parents might find themselves reading a few more pages after the kids go to bed since it’s so captivating!
Zarn’s world-building is creative and meticulous, allowing the reader to easily picture the environments and animals that Amelia and her siblings come across. Every obstacle the Davies family encounters, from dangerous environments to intimidating foes, imparts important knowledge about facing fear and accepting one’s own inner strength.
To sum it up, Amelia and the Orc is a fantastic addition to any middle school library. It’s a tale of heart, bravery, and enchantment that quietly imparts moral lessons about inclusivity and responsibility. Families, teachers, and young readers alike should read this book. It’s the kind of tale that piques your interest and makes you excited for the next chapter!
