Loss and Luxury – Book Review
by E.H Wildish
E.H. Wildish’s captivating book “Loss and Luxury” skillfully combines themes of ambition, resiliency, and the pursuit of inner peace. I was both enthralled and motivated by Holly Hunt’s story, as she navigates through life’s challenges and victories. I was so happy to receive a review copy of this book so that I could enjoy and share my thoughts with all of you.
I was intrigued by this story from the first time I saw the cover and read the blurb, and it did not disappoint. This book begins by telling us more about Holly, who hasn’t had it easy in life.
A string of terrible tragedies plague Holly’s early years. Her mother dies from illness, her sister perishes in a horrific automobile accident, and her father leaves the family. Still, Holly is unwavering in her drive to succeed despite these setbacks. Her love of fashion journalism brings her to Elite, a prominent magazine, where she delves into the glamorous yet rigorous world of haute couture.
But she also falls deep into the life of a party girl, seduced by the glamour of flashy parties and short-lived romances. Her marriage to the mysterious and affluent Jake looks like a dream come true at first, but it falls apart when Jake leaves her for a male escort who used to be a professional golfer. Can you imagine?
Holly is devastated by this betrayal and goes to an unexpected destination for comfort – a quiet order convent.
From the very first chapter, I was sucked in by Holly’s story:
At thirty-three years old, I did something my mother always joked I’d do. I joined a convent. I’d had enough of battling life’s problems. Bad friends and worse men. Narcissistic colleagues and ever appearing bills. I tried everything to make my marriage work but decided it was safer to be a bride of God. There was probably a better chance of that relationship working out anyway. All I had to do was take a vow of silence and chastity. A safer option than for better or worse.
But Holly does not find the convent to be the haven she had imagined. Remarkably materialistic and preoccupied with worldly matters, the nuns reflect the very things Holly was trying to get away from. This clever turn of events deepens the story by emphasizing how universal life’s problems are and how difficult it is to find true serenity.
“Loss and Luxury” explores the paradox of living a life that is simultaneously rife with severe sorrow and the attraction of luxury. Holly’s path is one of self-discovery and tenacity as she navigates the complexities of her desires and the realities of her experiences. Holly’s triumphs and tribulations are beautifully portrayed in Wildish’s rich and evocative prose.
I really enjoy the pacing of the story, the carefully placed humor, and the well-written dialogue. Often, I found myself learning more about the characters or the story through their conversations and it all seemed to flow smoothly. Sometimes it felt like a roller coaster ride of emotions as we travel along with Holly through each part of her story.
This book is a moving examination of the human condition rather than just a tale of personal development – we can all see some of ourselves in Holly and her story. We also see those around us in the story and the people around Holly, as well.
Wildish’s subtle depiction of Holly’s character as well as the detailed descriptions of the convent and the fashion industry makes for a gripping and thought-provoking story. Readers will be thinking about Holly’s path long after the last page is flipped since the themes of resiliency and pursuing happiness are so universal.
To sum up, “Loss and Luxury” is a masterfully written story that provides a meaningful contemplation on the unavoidable tragedies and transient delights of life. Life isn’t always what we expect. Sometimes, it’s much, much more.
Overall, it’s immensely engaging and compelling. I enjoyed reading it and I heartily recommend it. I look forward to reading more of this talented writer’s work.
5 stars from me!
